Mark Blyth

Mark Blyth is a Scottish political scientist. He is Professor of International Political Economy in the Department of Political Science at Brown University and a Faculty Fellow at Brown’s Watson Institute for International Studies. He is a political economist, whose research interest lies in political science, economics, sociology, evolutionary theory, complexity theory and focuses on how uncertainty and randomness impact economic systems. Today Professor Blyth is internationally recognized for his ideas. His works encompass areas like institutional change, political parties, the politics of ideas and the politics of finance.In his works he discusses the evolutionary dynamics in financial systems, how agents act within such systems, the politics of regulatory change and the role of macroprudential regulation.

He has authored several books, among which “Great Transformations: Economic Ideas and Institutional Change in the Twentieth Century” (Cambridge University Press 2002), “Austerity: The History of a Dangerous Idea” (Oxford University Press 2013) and “The Future of the Euro” (Oxford University Press 2015).

His critique of austerity "Austerity: The History of a Dangerous Idea" was translated into many languages and won several awards.

Blyth grew up in Dundee, Scotland. He received his BA in Political Science from Strathclyde University. He completed his MA in Political Science in 1993 and his PhD in Political Science from Columbia University in 1999.
