Tawakkol Karman

Tawakkol Karman was born in Shara'b As Salam, Taiz Governorate, Yemen.She is a journalist and human rights activist. She is also a political science graduate from the University of Sana’a. The human rights activist also has an undergraduate degree in commerce from the University of Science and Technology

The ‘Iron Woman’, as she is fondly referred to by her fellow Yemenis, co-won the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, setting a record as the first Arab woman to do so. She is credited with positively influencing the 2011 Yemeni uprising. In 2005, Tawakkol began her activism for human rights by co-founding the "Women Journalists without Chains" group.

She has for a very long time, opposed corruption on the part of the government.Tawakkol has been associated with international government organizations particularly the United Nations Security Council and the United State Government. She also spoke out concerning the 2013 Egyptian protests and coup d’état.

Tawakkol has stated that she is a citizen of the world, with the Earth as her country and humanity as her nation.’
